ಅನ್ವಯ (ವಾಕ್ಯ ಮಟ್ಟ)

ಶ್ಲೋಕಾರ್ಥ (ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮಟ್ಟ)
ಭೀಷ್ಮನಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಮ್ಮ ಈ ಸೈನ್ಯಬಲ (ಅಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ), ಆದರೆ ಭೀಮನಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಇವರ ಆ ಸೈನ್ಯಬಲ (ಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ).
ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ
ಇದು ಗೀತೆಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಚರ್ಚಾಸ್ಪದ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು - "ಅಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" ಮತ್ತು "ಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" ಪದಗಳ ಅರ್ಥದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಿನ್ನಾಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಿದೆ:
- ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ: "ಅಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" = "ಅಪರಿಮಿತವಾದ" (ಭೀಷ್ಮನಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿತವಾದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಅಪರಿಮಿತ/ಅಗಣಿತ), ಮತ್ತು "ಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" = "ಪರಿಮಿತವಾದ" (ಭೀಮನಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿತವಾದ ಪಾಂಡವ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಸೀಮಿತ). ಈ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನು ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.
- ಆಧುನಿಕ ಅನೇಕ ಅನುವಾದಕರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ: "ಅಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" = "ಸಾಲದ/ಅಸಮರ್ಪಕ" (ನಮ್ಮ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಸಾಲದು), "ಪರ್ಯಾಪ್ತಂ" = "ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು/ಸಮರ್ಪಕ" (ಅವರ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಸಾಕು). ಈ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ಆಂತರಿಕ ಆತಂಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಎರಡೂ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಗಳು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಸಂದರ್ಭಾನುಸಾರ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥ (ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ಆತಂಕ) ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸೂಕ್ತವೆಂದು ಅನೇಕ ಆಧುನಿಕ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Anvaya (Phrase Level)
bhīṣmābhirakṣitam tat asmākam balam aparyāptam; bhīmābhirakṣitam idam eteṣām balam tu paryāptam.
Our army, protected by Bhīṣma, is aparyāptam; but this army of theirs, protected by Bhīma, is paryāptam.
Translation (Sloka Level)
Our army, protected by Bhīṣma, is unlimited [or: insufficient]; but their army, protected by Bhīma, is limited [or: sufficient].
Commentary
This is one of the most debated verses in the Gita — commentators disagree sharply on the meaning of "aparyāptam" and "paryāptam":
- Śaṅkarācārya reads "aparyāptam" as "unlimited/immeasurable" (our army, protected by Bhīṣma, is boundless) and "paryāptam" as "limited" (the Pāṇḍava army, protected by Bhīma, is finite) — in this reading, Duryodhana expresses confidence.
- Many modern translators read "aparyāptam" as "insufficient/inadequate" and "paryāptam" as "sufficient/adequate" — in this reading, Duryodhana reveals underlying anxiety, since he goes on to ask Bhīṣma for protection.
Both readings remain current; many modern scholars favor the second (Duryodhana's anxiety) as better fitting the context.
